HURRICANE MATTHEW
On September 25th, a tropical wave that had pushed off the African coast was named Invest 97L. As the system moved in the Atlantic, it began to organize and was named Tropical Storm Matthew three days later before becoming a hurricane as it approached the eastern Caribbean. At its peak, Hurricane Matthew reached Category 5 strength late September 30th with 160 mile per hour winds.
After Hurricane Matthew made landfall in Haiti, Cuba, and the Bahamas, the storm headed toward the United States. Matthew skirted the coasts of Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina, eventually making landfall near McClellanville, South Carolina on October 8th. At this point, the hurricane was classified as a Category 1.
Storm Services responded to the needs of our customers before, during, and after the storm. As Hurricane Matthew approached the coast, we began putting plans in place so that we could respond quickly to any needs that arrived. After the hurricane made landfall, our teams jumped into action. Our base camp services were activated for 27 sites. Our line crews were deployed to Georgia, while our damage assessor teams worked in Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, and North Carolina. In addition to helping in the United States, a trailer load of our ice was shipped to the Bahamas in response to the storm. We are happy to report that we had no safety issues and our entire team returned home safely!
