HURRICANE MICHAEL
Not far behind Hurricane Florence, another storm, Hurricane Michael, followed and became the second major hurricane of the season. Michael was the strongest Atlantic hurricane to form in the month of October since Hurricane Wilma of 2005. Approaching the Florida panhandle, the storm reached major hurricane status as it strengthened to a Category 4 hurricane on October 9th. Hurricane Michael made landfall near Mexico Beach, Florida, on October 10th as the strongest storm of the season. By the time it passed over Georgia, it had weakened to a tropical storm.

While our logistics, damage assessment, and lineman teams mobilized to be prepared to respond to the storm, several of our team members braced for impact at their own homes in Florida and Georgia. Following impact, time and time again, our team members reported having to cut their way out of their personal homes in order to make their way out to assist with the recovery at our base camp sites. Teams at our Georgia Storm Center were able to continue to work due to a generator, which ran the office for over a week.

After setting up over 60 sites combined in Georgia and Florida, teams remained in the area until the last week of November. The recovery following Hurricane Michael will last for the foreseeable future. Our thought and prayers remain with those impacted.
