A BETTER WAY TO MANAGE
SYSTEM ASSESSMENTS
Storm Services has developed a software program to use while performing system reliability inspection work for utility companies, thus eliminating the use of paper maps and hand written notes for data collection. The new program allows all data and information needed to design, redesign, or rebuild electrical circuits to be collected and recorded on a tablet while in the field, thus improving efficiency and accuracy. In addition, the program will accommodate information collected during Pad Mount Transformer Inspections, Joint Use Inspections, and Security and Street Light audits.
This program was in development for over 18 months and is currently being used to provide information to our clients while performing reliability inspections on their system. As of the beginning of February, we have successfully inspected approximately 1000 miles of distribution and transmission circuits without incurring any interruptions or glitches. All of the data we have gathered, along with photos, has been electronically transmitted to our clients and used by their designers to produce work order requests to repair each circuit.
Feedback from our clients has been positive due to the increased accuracy and efficiency of data collection and work order preparation. Common errors, such as pole locations, equipment types, and needed repairs are accurately identified through the use of GPS and drop down box information. With a few modifications, this application can be used for collecting damage assessment data.
Clients who have seen the application demonstrated have thought it was user friendly and in most cases thought it was better than the in-house application that they were using to collect data. One client is in the process of doing a pilot program to determine whether they may want to purchase the application to install on their site.
